Off Grid Solar Panel Wiring Options

There are basically three possibilities one can wire solar panels together. Each of these wiring methods can be applied for different solar power off-grid needs.

Wiring Solar Panels in Parallel

For connecting solar panel wires in parallel, the positive terminal, which is usually marked as red, needs to be connected to anther positive (red) and the negative, usually marked as black needs to be connected to another negative (black) terminal. With connection of solar panels in parallel the current of each panel is added for higher current output and the Voltage stays the same.

If we are connecting 2 solar panels (each unit rated 20 Volts at 5 Amps) in parallel, then this solar array will have the total system voltage of 20 Volts (unchanged), and the total current of 10 Amps (5+5).

Wiring Solar Panels in Series

For connecting the wires of solar panels in series, the positive terminal of one solar panel, which is usually marked as red, needs to be attached to the negative side of another panel, which is usually marked as black. The advantage of wiring solar panels in series is that the voltage of all panels will be added together for a much higher voltage output (in Watts), however, your  the current output (in Amps) stays the same.

Wiring Solar Panels in both Parallel and Series

For connecting solar panels in together in a combination of  parallel and series, you have to divide panels in groups. If you have 6 panels maybe you want to divide them in 3 groups or 2 or 2 groups of 3 panels. Each group of panels are first connected together in serious and then in parallel to other groups. this is a great off grid solar panel wiring method for higher amperage with increases the charging capacity yet still maintaining the added voltage of panels produced in series wiring.
